Today’s post hits way too close to home. As a marketeer who spends a majority of my day crafting marketing content and product messaging, I’m guilty of reusing a particular subset of words. What are these exactly? A few of these recycled words are my own “pets” that I’ve incorporated into my copy for years; others are today’s trendy words making their rounds across the marketing sphere.
Now there is nothing wrong in dropping a buzzword or two, but you can go overboard and dilute your message to the point that there is nothing unique in your value proposition. The net effect…no emotional response from your prospects and customers. And without a response, you’re bound to lose their attention — and most important, their business.
Folks, it’s time to kick these overused words to the curb and get more specific with your marketing speak (oops…I think I accidentally dropped another one!). To get the ball rolling, here are my top 15 buzzwords listed in no particular order.
My top 15 marketing buzzwords
- Collaborate (other forms: collaborative, collaboration)
- Integrate (other forms: integrated, integration)
- Best practices
- Market leader (similar: industry-leading, thought leader, thought leadership)
- Alignment (other form: align)
- Scalable (other form: scalability)
- Drill down
- Pain points
- Engage (other forms: engaging, engagement)
P.S. Please be kind if I fall off the wagon and use one of these buzzwords in my posts! Now it’s your turn…what marketing buzzwords are you kicking to the curb?
